Dwight's First Encounter With the ASM.

It didn't quite go the way Dwight hoped it would...
In December 2010, Dwight was lucky enough to find himself in Miami and decided to take 2 days to drive to Titusville to check out the Cape.

On his journey, he passed the ASM building by pure accident, but he was intrigued and thought he'd visit on the spur of the moment. But, alas, the museum was closed.

Jump forward to May, 2023 and Dwight was in Cocoa Beach, preparing to take part in the Skylab 50th anniversary celebration, beautifully organised by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.

Again, Dwight decided to see if this time fortune would favour the foolish, and set out to Titusville.

Luckily the museum was open and he got to know Anita, the main lady after Karan, who has been running the show at the museum for many years.

The American Space Museum

There are places in the world where space pulls you in like a vortex. The American Space Museum is one such location. For any space fan "resistence is futile"! (But in a good way)

You think you're entering a small venue, but looks can be deceiving. As if by magic, stairs lead you to rooms filled with untold treasures of the US space program.

If you're visiting the cape, be sure to make a stop here!

A Lasting Friendship

After dazzling Anita with his passion for all things Skylab, Dwight started what was to become a lasting, international friendship with a shared passion and determination for preserving history for generations.

In November, 2023 Dwight organized the appearance of Jack Lousma and Rusty Schweickart at the museum, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Karan Edith Conklin

Karan was the leading voice of the museum as its executive director for 21 years. Kind, caring and dedicated to sharing the knowledge, the fun and the legacy of US spaceflight, she was taken from us unexpectedly last weekend.

To celebrate her passion for space and in particular for the success of the American Space Museum, Karan's family is asking for support to the museum in lieu of ordering flowers.

Watch the "Stay Curious" video presented by Karan's dear friend Mark Marquette to learn our more.
